What is a challenge ladder?
Fencing the same people over and over isn’t necessarily a good thing. Fencers need to fence with a variety of people to learn tactics and improve their skills. A dueling ladder is a great motivational tool that fosters problem solving as a necessary outcome for success.
• Because it is an ongoing process, students are regularly challenged in order to maintain or
increase their ranking. This fosters regular attendance and a desire to improve.
• The ladder becomes a central and lively aspect of the salle’s culture.
• The ladder board becomes a lasting legacy of the salle’s activity.
Fencing Challenge Ladder
Challenging Rules
- You may only challenge the same person once per week
- You may challenge any person ranked higher than you, up to 3 ranks above (up to 2 if less than 10 people in ladder)
- You may not challenge anyone ranked lower than you
- Persons ranked 1-4 may only challenge the person directly above them on the ladder (one by one!)
- A challenge may not be issued more than one week in advance. Such challenges will have priority over any subsequent challenges. Challenges can be logged at the club night or by email.
Rules of Advancement
If challenger wins bout:
- Challenger will occupy the opponent’s previous rank.
- Opponent will be bumped down one rank, with each subsequent player also bumped.
If challenger looses bout:
- No changes are made to the rankings.
Bout Rules
- All bouts are to be scored using electric scoring equipment
- If scoring equipment is not available, dry bouts must have 2 judges
- Results to be presented to club officer immediately after bout
- All bouts will adhere to official CFF rules
Maintaining your position on the ladder/ General Rules
· If someone challenges you, you must win your duel to retain your position.
· You must duel at least twice each calendar month. Any fencer absent from fencing classes for two weeks may be bumped from their position on the ladder and onto the horizontal ladder at the discretion of the club officers.
· A fencer who does not show up for a challenge forfeits the bout.
· You may not challenge the same person more than once per week unless one of the duelists has subsequently settled a new duel.
· You may not challenge a person already challenged until that duel is settled.
· When a challenge is made to someone who is two or more rungs higher on the ladder, the fencers in between challenger and challengee are “frozen” until the duel is resolved.
· Frozen fencers can be challenged, but they may not contest a duel until the duel that caused them to be frozen has been resolved, unless the outcome of the frozen fencers’ duel will not affect the other duel. Challenges issued to frozen fencers may be invalidated if the result of the other duel places the proposed challenged beyond the reach of the challenger.
· Any club member may join the ladder by simply placing their name at the bottom position.
Congratulations to theSummer ladder winners!
