Feb 06, 2008 06:27 PM Two members of the Sport Fencing Markham club came away with medals from the Saints Challenge in Aurora. Jonathan Cheevers, 25, earned a gold medal in the Open Epee category. In the Under-17 Epee, Ilyas Khamis, 12, earned a silver medal. The competition was an open event for all beginner fencers.

Fencer upsets top seeds to earn gold medal

Two members of the Sport Fencing Markham team earned high placings when they competed at the Ontario Challenge Circuit event at Brock University in St. Catharines. Jason Munro, 34, earned a silver medal in the senior men’s epee (duelling sword) division. Entered in the 80-competitor field as the 29th seed, Munro won three of his matches, including decisions over the first and fourth seeds, to reach the final. Antonetta Rescigno finished 11th in a 40-competitor field in the senior women’s epee division.
